Re: One rep per 50,000 AND Proportional Representation

There are many issues with fair vote that are actually in opposition to the concept of representation. The first is direct accountability. Since there are several individuals elected in a district, none of them are truly accountable. They can just point fingers all day long. When one representative ...

Re: Was the 17th Amendment properly ratified?

If we're going to address the issues with the election of senators, then address all of the issues. I don't like it that they serve 6-year terms. The world can really change in 6 years and we tend to forget what happened 6 years ago. The senators need to be accountable at all times in all things to ...

Re: Your House of Representatives

I also think it is unlikely that so much power would ever be granted to so few people, specifically in the cases of the Speaker and the Committee Chairs. This sort of power already belongs to the Speaker and the Committee Chairs. Not only is it wrong to say it's unlikely, it has already happened. I...

A book. We need a book.

Jeff, we really, really need a book. We need a physical, well-documented thing for people to flip through and hold up. It is completely necessary that someone write a book on this topic. Tom Woods briefly mentions the issue the first chapter of Nullification , but I'm sure it probably went right ove...

Do you happen to know where I could get the total number of pages in the CFR each year? I've always wanted to graph out the increases in the number of pages each year.

Re: Repealing the 17th amendment

So many things that a neighboring state may do can affect other states (e.g., income tax rates, restrictions on alcohol sales, etc.). That obviously can't be a rationale for regulating what few areas the states still have sovereignty over -- except where explicitly permitted in the Constitution. We...

Re: Repealing the 17th amendment

Well, I disagree on this one. The problem with the state argument on Federal positions is that they do affect the citizens of other states. Special interest ownership of the senators from just a few states can wield massive power in the Senate, and this affects all states. I do not want to have a si...

Re: Apportionment.us: three judge panel to be convened!

I completely agree that the states should have two senators in each county, but the senators should be appointed by the county supervisor, which throws the unicameral argument out. It is counter-intuitive and unpopular, but the fact is that we need a proper voice for businesses in government. Here i...

Re: Your House of Representatives

This type of governance only works when special interests control the governing body. By eliminating or making negligible special interest influence, the rules would become much more equitable. Each branch of Congress sets its own procedures and it is highly unlikely that a majority would vote to pu...

Re: Seeking Nomination SCLP US House for the 4th District of SC

Hi, Steven. I think that's an interesting position to take as a platform for Congress. How do you find the voters with the concept? Are you running with the intent to make it into office or for some other purpose? I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but I know that being a candidate for office c...

TARP contacts

During the hearings on the TARP Bill Congress was being contacted by a very high number of people who did not want to pass the bill. Does anyone here know if there is a public record of contacts to Congress and what they said to their Representatives? It would be very interesting to provide the rati...

Any way to make the views only go up once for each user? Right now it just counts any hit to the page. I just made the 17th thread go from 383 to 384 by looking at it, even though nothing new has been posted since the last time I looked at it.

Re: Repealing the 17th amendment

I've been thinking that I rather like the idea of having the senators appointed by the states similar to ambassadors, with no defined term. Six years is a very long time and all sorts terrible things could be done during that period. If the states appoint the senator, then could send a replacement a...

Re: Getting Past the Mental Blocks

While I agree they should work either from or very near to their districts, I disagree with having them work from home. Politics invites everyone in a district to show up at a candidate's office, and there will be some people showing up that many would prefer not to let into their homes. I agree wit...

Re: Campaign Financing and Constituent Communal Bonds

I like to explain it like this, which, believe it or not, is how the local GOP chairman explained it to me: There are three ways to get elected to congress: 1. Be the appointed candidate of either the Republican or Democratic party. 2. Have $5-10 milloin of your own cash to blow. 3. Already be famou...

Re: Repealing the 17th amendment

I don't agree that having the governor appoint the senator would solve the deadlock problem, and it could even aggravate it. If Schwarzenegger were to appoint someone to the U.S. Senate, I'm quite confident whoever the appointee is would get not get approved by the state senate. Any negotiating atte...

I'm probably thinking more along the lines of when we have a blog. Take specific examples, even if they are a hot topic, and demonstrate how congress is not doing what its constituents want and instead serving the special interests. This way we can illustrate how TTO applies directly to today's issu...

Re: Repealing the 17th amendment

When I hear 'repeal' I think 'return to the way it was before'. But the argument instantly comes up 'the way it worked before was not very good'. That's why I suggest using something like 'amend the 17th' as a solution, even though it's more like repeal and amend. I don't support returning to the wa...

Jeff, can you write a quick blurb on how an amendment convention would work? I think it's widely understood that a Constitutional Convention is open game for congress to just rewrite everything.
