One-third of the House votes by proxy on major legislation

Post by JEQuidam »

Over a third of the 435 Representatives voted by proxy on August 12, 2022, for House Resolution 8. Absurdly named the “Inflation Reduction Act”, this bill authorizes spending several hundred billion dollars on various government programs. That spending includes billions of additional dollars for the IRS in hopes that it will increase federal tax revenue in order to help defray the expenditures on various other programs authorized by this resolution. Of those who either voted for or against the bill, 158 Representatives were not present, voting via proxy (listed here).

The fact that so many Representatives can vote via proxies, and for any reason, verifies what we already know: In a much larger House of Representatives, most of its members can work from their home districts where they can meet with, and better serve, their constituents.
